There are three confusing phrases used frequently in art theory that all seem to mean the same thing, but don't. They have a long history of being rhetorically abused, because people are more certain that they all mean something good, than they are about what they mean. Many people have tried to [win arguments without making them] by changing the meanings of these phrases.
